How Number Porting Works, Step by Step: A Switching Timeline
We’ve written before about why you get to keep your number. This time, let’s walk through the actual timeline — step by step — so you know exactly what to expect when you switch.
Step 1: You submit the request
You provide a recent bill from your current provider, the account number, any PIN, and the service address on file. This is the single most important step — the details have to match your current account exactly, or the port gets delayed.
Step 2: We submit to your current carrier
Your new provider files the port request with your old carrier on your behalf. The old carrier reviews it and either accepts or flags a mismatch. Nothing changes on your end yet — your phones keep working normally.
Step 3: The waiting period
Carriers coordinate the transfer, which typically takes 7 to 14 business days for a small business. During this window your existing service runs exactly as before. Behind the scenes, everything is being lined up for a clean switch.
Step 4: Cutover
On the scheduled date, the number switches to your new service — usually a quick, near-instant change. We confirm calls are ringing correctly before considering the port complete. This is the only moment anything actually changes.
Step 5: You’re live
Your number now rings on your new system, with all your features ready to go. The whole time, your business stayed reachable.
We handle the hard parts
Porting sounds involved, but you really only do Step 1 — we manage the rest. Ask us about porting your number and we’ll get the timeline started.
