Keeping Your Business Number When You Switch Providers
The number one worry we hear from business owners thinking about switching phone providers isn’t price or features — it’s the number itself. You’ve printed it on cards, trucks, and signage; your customers have it saved. The good news: you almost certainly get to keep it. Here’s how.
What “number porting” actually means
Porting is the process of moving your existing phone number from your current provider to your new one. Your number isn’t owned by your old phone company — it’s yours to take with you. The new provider coordinates the transfer behind the scenes so calls keep ringing throughout.
How long it takes
For most small businesses, porting takes somewhere between 7 and 14 days. It’s not instant, because your current carrier has to release the number, but your phones keep working the entire time. Nothing goes dark while the port is in progress — the switch happens at the end, once everything’s confirmed.
What to have ready
To port smoothly, you’ll typically need a recent bill from your current provider (it confirms the account details), the account number and any PIN, and the service address on file. Small mismatches — like a suite number that doesn’t match — are the most common cause of delays, so it’s worth double-checking before you start.
The short version
You keep your number, your phones don’t go down, and a good provider handles the paperwork for you. At Voip4Less, porting is free and we manage the whole process. Ask us about porting your number and we’ll walk you through it.
